Why the Emerald Coast for Masters Weekend

Tournament basketball is more fun when the destination is real. Fort Walton Beach and Destin make the Emerald Coast Masters a weekend your team will keep coming back to.

Most masters basketball tournaments are held in suburban high school gyms with no surrounding amenities. The Emerald Coast Masters is different on purpose. The tournament is held in Fort Walton Beach, Florida — the western edge of the Emerald Coast — with Destin, Miramar Beach, and 30A all within a 30-minute drive. Teams that travel here actually want to come back.

The location, in plain terms

The Emerald Coast is the stretch of Gulf of Mexico shoreline running roughly from Pensacola Beach east to Panama City Beach. Fort Walton Beach sits in the middle. The water here is genuinely emerald green — clearer than anywhere else on the Gulf, because of the white quartz sand on the bottom that reflects sunlight differently than the sandy-brown beaches further west.

FCP Sports — the tournament venue — is in Fort Walton Beach, about 12 minutes from the closest beach access and about 20 minutes from Destin Harbor.

February weather you'll actually want

The tournament runs February 11–14, 2027. Average daytime highs in Fort Walton Beach in February are 60–66°F. Lows are around 45°F. Sunny days are common. It's not swimming weather — but it's perfect for walking the beach, eating outside on a heated patio, and wearing a sweatshirt at sunset. Compared to where most masters players live in February (the Northeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic), this is a vacation.

What to do when you're not playing

The beach

Okaloosa Island Pier and the public beaches in Fort Walton Beach are 5–10 minutes from the venue. Henderson Beach State Park in Destin (about 25 minutes east) is another option for an extended walk. The sand is squeaky-white and the water is clear even in winter.

Destin Harbor

HarborWalk Village in Destin has restaurants, bars, fishing charters, and a boardwalk along the harbor. About 25 minutes from the venue.

Crab Island

A submerged sandbar in the middle of Destin Pass — a destination in itself in summer. Less active in February but still a striking sight from a boat or the bridge.

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

On Okaloosa Island, this is a small marine park good for families coming to watch games. About 10 minutes from FCP Sports.

For the spouses, kids, and friends traveling with players

Emerald Coast Masters draws a lot of family travel. We've put together separate guides for what spouses and kids can do during games:

Why Fort Walton Beach (not Destin proper)

Fort Walton Beach is quieter, less expensive, and closer to the airport. Destin is the more famous beach town — but it's 25 minutes east and much more expensive in lodging. Most teams stay in Fort Walton Beach near the venue and drive into Destin for one nice dinner during the weekend.
