Airport Guide: Flying In for the Tournament

Two regional airports serve the Emerald Coast. Here's how to choose.

Two airports are reasonable for getting to FCP Sports in Fort Walton Beach: Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) and Pensacola International Airport (PNS). A third option is Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) near Panama City — but it's further east and less commonly used by tournament teams.

Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) — closest

Drive time to FCP Sports: About 12 minutes (5.5 miles)
Address: Eglin Air Force Base, FL
Code: VPS

VPS is the obvious choice if your home airport offers a direct flight. The airport sits on Eglin Air Force Base and shares the runway. The terminal is small, friendly, and you can be in the rental car within 20 minutes of landing.

Airlines that typically serve VPS: Delta, American, Southwest, United, Allegiant. Direct flights from Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Nashville, Houston, Chicago Midway, and several other hubs. Coverage from the Northeast is limited — most Northeast travelers connect through Atlanta or Charlotte.

Rental cars at VPS: All major brands on-site. Reserve in advance for tournament weekend.

Pensacola International Airport (PNS)

Drive time to FCP Sports: About 1 hour (50 miles)
Code: PNS

Pensacola is the larger, busier alternative. Significantly more flight options — especially from the Northeast — and often cheaper than VPS. Worth it if you can save $150+ on the flight, since the rental car covers the extra hour.

Airlines that typically serve PNS: Delta, American, Southwest, United, Frontier, Allegiant, Spirit. Wider direct coverage including Boston, New York (LGA/JFK), Newark, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis. PNS often has 2–3x the flight options of VPS.

The drive from PNS to FCP Sports: Take I-10 East to FL-85 South. About 60 minutes in normal traffic. Friday afternoon arrival is the only time you'd want to add 15 minutes for traffic on FL-85.

How to choose between VPS and PNS

Driving in

If your team is within 6 hours by car, drive. Most teams from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and parts of Tennessee drive in. I-10 is the main artery — exit at FL-85 South for Fort Walton Beach. Plenty of parking at FCP Sports and at the host hotels.

Once you arrive

Most teams check into the host hotel Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Pool play starts Thursday afternoon for some divisions. See the tournament hotels page for the host hotel block.
