Masters basketball uses NCAA men's rules as a baseline, with adjustments for age divisions, player safety, and 3-on-3 format. This page walks through the rules in plain language for captains and players who haven't competed in masters basketball before. For the official Emerald Coast Masters rule sheet, see the tournament rules page.
Eligibility
Age cutoffs
Players must meet the minimum age for their division as of December 31 of the tournament year. A player who turns 40 on December 30 is eligible for the 40+ division for the entire calendar year. A player who turns 40 on January 1 is not.
Roster locks
Most masters tournaments lock rosters before pool play. Players cannot move between teams once registered. Captains must finalize their rosters in the registration system by the deadline (typically 7–14 days before the tournament).
Rostering younger players
Some masters tournaments allow up to 1–2 "playing-up" exceptions for younger players, but most do not. The Emerald Coast Masters does not allow players to play down out of their age division.
Game format (5-on-5 divisions)
Game length
Two halves of 16–20 minutes each, depending on the bracket round. Pool play games are usually shorter (16-minute halves) and bracket games are longer (20-minute halves). Halftime is 3–5 minutes.
Clock
Running clock for the bulk of the game. The clock stops on dead balls in the final 2 minutes of each half. Free throws stop the clock per standard rules.
Shot clock
Most masters tournaments use a 30- or 35-second shot clock. Some smaller events run no shot clock — but the Emerald Coast Masters runs a shot clock to keep the games moving.
Timeouts
Typically 3 timeouts per game (2 full + 1 30-second), with 1 additional timeout in overtime.
Overtime
3-minute overtime period. Subsequent overtimes if needed.
Fouls and free throws
Personal fouls
5 personal fouls = player fouls out (some tournaments use 6 — check tournament-specific rules).
Bonus
One-and-one on the 7th team foul of each half. Double bonus on the 10th. Some tournaments use the NBA two-shot bonus on the 5th team foul per half — verify before tip-off.
Technical fouls
Two technical fouls = ejection. The Emerald Coast Masters enforces sportsmanship strictly. Coaches and players who get into officials repeatedly will be warned and then ejected.
Flagrant fouls
Flagrant 1 = two free throws + possession. Flagrant 2 = automatic ejection. Player safety is a real priority at masters age — flagrant calls are weighted toward defender protection.
3-on-3 format (70+ division)
Game format
Half-court. One basket. Possession changes after every made basket and on defensive rebounds (depending on tournament rules — Emerald Coast Masters uses standard 3-on-3 rules).
Scoring
1 point for shots inside the arc. 2 points for shots from outside the arc. First team to 21 wins, OR the team leading after 10 minutes if neither has hit 21.
Roster size
Up to 5 players per team for 3-on-3.
Officials
One certified referee per game in 3-on-3. Score and time kept by a tournament-provided table official.
Sportsmanship and conduct
Masters basketball relies on a higher standard of sportsmanship than open men's leagues. The unwritten rule: leave the ego in the parking lot. Trash talk, complaining to officials, and physical play beyond what the rules allow gets policed quickly. Ejections affect the player's eligibility for future Emerald Coast Masters tournaments.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a player play in two divisions?
- No. Players are rostered to one team in one division for the duration of the tournament.
- What happens if a team doesn't have enough players for a game?
- A team must have at least 4 players to start a game. Fewer than 4 = forfeit.
- Can teams from outside the U.S. register?
- Yes. International teams welcome. We've had teams travel from Canada and the Caribbean in past years.
- What's the dress code?
- Matching jerseys with numbers required. No exceptions in bracket play.
- Are there any rules different from college basketball?
- Yes — game length is shorter, the running clock is more aggressive, and player safety rules are tightened (especially in 60+ and older divisions).
