The 45+ bracket at the Emerald Coast Masters is where craft beats athleticism. It's basketball played with the kind of patience you only develop over 30 years of playing.
The 45+ style of play
Three things stand out in 45+ games. First, the half-court offense actually runs. Teams call out sets, set legitimate screens, and execute. Second, the post game is alive. The 45+ post player has been backing guys down for two decades and knows every angle. Third, the deep ball matters. Every roster has at least one guy who'll make 4 of 8 from three.
What's de-emphasized: vertical athleticism, full-court pressing for 40 minutes, "athletic" mistakes. Teams that try to run-and-jump for an entire game in the 45+ bracket usually flame out by the third quarter.
Format and rules — 45+ division
- Game format: Full-court 5-on-5
- Game length: Two halves, regulation length
- Officials: Two certified referees per game
- Roster size: Up to 10 players
- Eligibility cutoff: Players must be 45 or older as of December 31 of the tournament year
- Bracket: Pool play Thursday/Friday, single-elimination Saturday/Sunday
Who plays 45+ masters
This is where you find the dads who never put it down. A lot of these guys are high school coaches now. Some are still playing in church or city leagues twice a week. Many played JuCo or D-II college ball and never quite got the competition out of their system. The 45+ bracket draws teams from across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and beyond — guys who've known each other for years through the masters circuit.

Roster strategy for 45+
Two non-negotiables: a steady point guard and a real five. Most 45+ losses come from turnovers and offensive rebounds given up. If you've got a 6'5" body who'll just box out, you'll win games you have no business winning. Conditioning still matters — but in this bracket, smart conditioning beats raw cardio. Bring 8 healthy players and rotate.
