The 40+ division is masters basketball's center of gravity. Most regional masters tournaments fill this bracket first because it's the bridge — old enough to be "masters," young enough that almost everyone can still get up and down the floor. At the Emerald Coast Masters, expect this division to be the first one to hit the 8-team cap.
What 40+ basketball really looks like
The first thing you notice in the 40+ bracket: the screens are real. Players have learned that 30 minutes of physical screening will beat 30 minutes of trying to dunk. The second thing: the spacing. Forty-somethings have lived through the three-point revolution as players, coaches, and watchers. Every team has at least two shooters who can punish a sagging defense.
What you won't see as much: ego ball. By 40, the guys who only care about their own stats have either grown up or gone home. Teams in this bracket move the ball. The win comes from the assist column.

- Bracket: Pool play Thursday/Friday, single-elimination Saturday/Sunday
Why teams choose Emerald Coast Masters for their 40+ run
- Destination weekend. Fort Walton Beach and Destin are a real vacation, not a strip mall on I-75. Wives and kids actually want to come.
- Single venue. All games at FCP Sports. No driving across town between games.
- Reliable run. Tournaments that get cancelled or under-fill divisions are the masters circuit's biggest pain point. ECM commits to running every division it opens.
- Group hotel rates. See tournament hotels for the host hotel block.
How to build a 40+ roster that wins
Captains who advance deep in the 40+ bracket usually share a recipe: one ex-college guard who can still create off the dribble, two reliable shooters, two physical bigs who can defend without fouling, and a deep bench rotation so nobody dies in the second half. The 8th and 9th players matter as much as the starters at this age. Three games on a Saturday is brutal without depth.
