The 35+ division is the entry point to masters basketball. Players in this bracket are still moving — many recently aged out of open men's leagues, others have been holding down the gym for years. Expect competitive, physical games. This is not a "rec league with old guys." Teams come prepared.
What to expect in the 35+ bracket
The 35+ bracket attracts the deepest talent pool at any masters event. You'll see former college players, semi-pro guys, and serious amateurs who never stopped competing. Most rosters carry one or two former Division I or II college athletes. The pace is real — fast breaks, contested threes, full-court defense. Conditioning still matters here. Teams that show up out of shape get exposed by halftime.
What makes it different from open men's basketball: the savvy. Players in their late 30s have learned to use angles, screens, and patience. The games are smart. Captains who recruit a balance of athletic finishers and high-IQ playmakers tend to win this bracket.

Roster building tips for 35+
This is the bracket where you can't just bring your best four guys. The 35+ field is deep. Captains should think about:
- Two ball-handlers minimum. Pressing teams will exploit a single point guard.
- A real five. The interior game is still physical. You need a body inside, not a stretch four pretending.
- Shooters off the bench. Spacing wins late-game possessions.
- Conditioning. If half your roster smokes, you're losing the second half of every pool game.
